Day 341: Staccato Gelato

Sweet Tooth Alert!!  While recently perusing the streets of the lovely Sellwood District, Annie and I took a wrong turn that happend to turn out so right. We ended up running right into the vibrant business of Staccato Gelato. Knowing this is a fan favorite of the local Portland Gelato Shops, and we both had quite the sweet tooth, we had to go in and see what it was all about!

Staccato Gelato combines the craftsmanship of fine Italian gelato with fresh Oregon flavors and produce. In the support of locally owned business, they pride themselves on using local milk and cream, local produce and local suppliers. They offer 18 flavors of gelato daily, and a few extras here and there, depending on the chef’s choice. They also serve donuts that we hear give Voodoo a run for their money.  The master donuts craftsman is hard at work every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are worth every calorie, guaranteed.

Everyone there was super friendly to us as we indecisively tasted most of the choices.  Coconut, Pomegranate and Turtle were among the favorites. You’ll have to go check them out to see what i’m talking about! There’s a lot of seating, a kids area, free Wi-Fi, and outdoor seating year round!

Stacatto Gelato also has catering and wholesale items.  You can purchase any of their flavors by the gallon, just call to place an order.  Also, want them to cater a birthday party or celebratory event?? They have three great catering options:

Freezer Rider- Their mobile tricycle delivers prescooped gelato with a low carbon footprint and only methane emissions. Perfect for picnics in the park, reunions, birthdays or an afternoon treat for your hard-working employees.

Full Service Scooping Cart- For larger catered events, they can bring our fully staffed cart with a minimum of five gallons of gelato. No electricity required! A wonderful addition (or alternative) to wedding cake or a unique addition to any event.

DIY-  Gelato bought by the gallon combined with a catering setup equipped with cups, spoons, scoopers and/or dry ice.

We’re so glad we ran into Staccato Gelato, and we think you should make it a point to run into them sometime too at either of their two locations!

An unconventional idea for 365, but undoubtedly a fun thing to do in Portland, 365ers!

Day 248: Benson Hotel Champagne Brunch

What a beautiful and action packed weekend it was!  We had some great Oregon Football and the sunshine made it a great weekend for being out and about.  A long standing holiday tradition for my friends and I is enjoying a Sunday  brunch at the Benson.  If you’ve never been, make sure you bring your appetite.

The brunch is every Sunday and they offer one of the largest buffets I’ve ever seen.  King Crab legs, delicious cuts of meats, and plenty of other items that will suite all pallets.  The best part is the bottomless mimosas/champagne.

My girlfriends and I plan a brunch at the Benson every year as a way to talk about our successes from the year and the goals going into the next year – it’s my favorite way to wrap up the year.  We eat delicious foods, including dessert items and then shop till we drop around neighboring shops.

The brunch is $39 per adult and $18.50 for children and is offered each Sunday from 9:30am-2:00pm.

The holiday season is pretty special at this Portland landmark hotel.  The gingerbread house display is always phenomenal and worth the trip inside if nothing more.

There are 20 days until Christmas, make them count.

Day 246: Civil War Game Viewing Parties

It’s Civil War time once again! I have a lot riding on the results of Saturday’s Civil War game, and as a duck fan, let me tell you I am nervous!  Whether you’re a Duck or a Beaver, Saturday marks the day of Oregon’s football finest.  As an avid Duck fan, I will be glued to the TV this weekend hoping the ducks secure their position in the National Championship game in January 2011! This is a HUGE deal. However, what scares me the most is I know many Beavers out there, and I know they’ll be gunning for a big “W”, and we will definitely have our hands full. May the best team win!

Regardless of who you follow, you’ve got to watch! And luckily there are plenty great venues around Portland to watch the action and enjoy some great food and spirits.  Many of these places are even team specific so feel free to call and check if they’ll be a Duck or Beaver viewing party there!

Day 235: Lauro Kitchen

What a weekend!  I snuck out of Portland for the weekend and enjoyed the stormy weather courtesy of Lincoln City, Oregon – It was pretty fabulous.  On my way home, I started dreaming about the delicious dinner a had recently at Lauro Kitchen in Southeast Portland.

I’m a huge fan of family owned businesses and Lauro prides itself on jus that.  The dishes are perfectly planned and have received honorable mention on several occasions.

This Mediterranean spot has a very spacious feel.  It’s 2,400 square feet with large windows and high ceilings.  It feels perfectly comfortable.

The happy hour is great and features three of the most popular dishes on the menu.  I think I could order the Cataplana Roasted Mussels on repeat until they cut me off.

The meals are prepared with local ingredients and change based on the seasons.  There’s always something new and exciting to try and share.

Day 230: Fratelli Ristorante & Bar Due’

365 had one heck of an eventful week last week, and let me tell you, Portland can keep you busy when it comes to it’s great restaurant scene.  There’s something about the winter months that have me craving hearty, flavorful foods.  And I think I have found the perfect place to fulfill this craving. Fratelli’s Ristorante located in the heart of the Pearl District seems to have the recipe for everything I’m looking for, and I’m sure they can whip up what you’ve been craving too!

I had the pleasure of meeting with co-proprietor and GM, Tim Cuscaden.  Tim shared with me the true passion and design behind this 12 year Portland treasure.  Tim named sustainability as the secret to their restaurant success, “We don’t want to be a flash in the pan”, he explained.  This is precisely why I believe Fratelli’s will be a thing of the past, present, and future.  Tim is around most evenings so when you stop in, say hello.

Tim shares his vision with business partner and executive chef, Paul Klitsie. Together, they decided to approach their approach to food from the Italian perspective- quality over quantity.  They compile simple and top-notch ingredients to create a flavorful taste. Their meal selections showcase dishes from virtually every region of Italy, and all the ingredients and meats are seasonally selected, organic and locally grown.

The dining area is spacious and perfect for a great dinner party, with the architecture making you feel like you’re right in the heart of Tuscany. Or perhaps you’ll want to enjoy a glass of red or white Italian wine or a signature cocktail in the bar/lounge area, Bar Due’ . Either way, you will not be disappointed. Try out Fratelli’s- I hope you like it as much as I do.

Fratelli’s recently started serving lunch Tuesday-Friday 11:30am-2:00pm and Saturday’s 11:30am-4pm.

Open 7 days a week for dinner.
